NBR inventor of the month

Did you know that May is National Inventors Month? This annual celebration was created to promote the positive image of inventors and the real contributions they give to this world.

In the spirit of celebrating the month, NBR Supreme Council, the highest decision body in the Nigerian Books of Record has today awarded Mohammed Bah Abba, NBR inventor of the month in remembrance of his excellent record as an indigenous inventor.

He was a #Nigerian that developed the pot-in-pot refrigerator in the 1990s.

BACKGROUND

Mohammed Bah Abba (1964–2010) was a teacher from northern Nigeria who developed the pot-in-pot refrigerator in the 1990s.

The refrigerator is extremely simple and does not require power, making it suitable for use in desert environments without easy access to electricity or repairs.

It consists of a small earthenware pot placed inside a larger one, and the space between the two filled with moist sand.

The inner pot is filled with whatever is desired to be cooled (fruit, vegetables, drinks) and covered with a wet cloth.

The refrigerator does not use electricity. Instead, the evaporating water draws heat from the inside through the porous outer pot, cooling the interior by up to 14°C.

This invention also became an entrepreneurial masterstroke as Abbah employed skilled indigenous pot makers to mass-produce the first batch of 5,000 Pot-in-Pots.

He was presented with the Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2001 and $75,000 for the invention.
