Prof. A.A. Uwakwe

Prof. Augustine Amadikwa Uwakwe was born in 1962 to Mr. and Mrs Francis Uwakwe of Ikeduru, Imo State, Nigeria. He started his primary education in 1970 after the Nigerian Civil War.

 Prof. Uwakwe obtained his B.Sc, M.Sc and PhD degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Port Harcourt. He was the best graduating student in his B.Sc. class and the first PhD product of his department. He started his lecturing career in 1991 as an Assistant Lecturer in Biochemistry. He became an Associate Prof. in 2005 and a full Professor of Biochemistry in 2009. His major research areas are Medical/Phyto-medical Biochemistry, Enzymology and Pharmacology. He has over 250 research publications (national and international) in the areas of phytomedicine, blood diseases, enzymology and general biochemistry.

He has supervised several B.Sc students (not less than 400), over fifty (50) M.Sc. and over forty-five (50) PhD students, most of whom are gainfully employed within and outside the country; a few are Professors and some are Associate Professors. Prof. Uwakwe has served as External Examiner for Undergraduate, Postgraduate (M.Sc. and PhD) and MBBS programmes at several Universities (not less than 12).

Prof. A. A. Uwakwe has over 25 years of teaching and research experience. He has served and still serving the University system in several capacities such as Coordinator of several programmes, member and Chairman of several University Committees, Head of Department, and Director of Research Centre, member of the Governing Council, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Evangel University Akaeze, Ebonyi State and Gregory University Uturu, Abia State, Nigeria. He is also the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman the governing Council, of Lux Mundi University Umuahia and also of Thinkbig Institute, Umuahia, Abia State.

He is presently a Professorial Chair Occupant (Senator (Chief) Paulker Chair on Sickle Cell disease). He has also served as a visiting Professor to several Universities and also as an External Assessor to different Universities for various Professorial candidates.

Prof. Uwakwe is a Fellow of the Strategic Institute for Human Resources and National Development, and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB). He is also a Fellow of OSHA United Kingdom and the Institution of Humanitarian Studies Nigeria. He has been a member, of the Research Board of Advisors, of the American Biographical Society (ABS) from 2006 to date. He is also a Consulting editor of the Contemporary ‘Who is Who’ a publication of ABS. Professor Uwakwe is a member of several national and international Professional Organizations, notable among which are:

1. The Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
2. Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
3. International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
4. Nigerian Society for Medical Science Research. (He was National Secretary from 2001-2006)
5. Association of University Administrators (AUA), United Kingdom.
6. Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Private Universities. Etc

Prof. Uwakwe is a founding member and present Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sickle Cell Research and Awareness Group (SCRAG). He is also a founding member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the West African Society for Sickle Cell Research, Awareness and Control (WASRAC).

He has served the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) in several capacities:

1. Publicity Secretary/Treasurer, NSBMB, South-East zone (2000 to 2007).
2. General Secretary, NSBMB, 2003 to 2007
3. NSBMB Committee on Professional/Honorary Awards (2005 to 2007)

He also served as Chairman, of the Curriculum Development Committee on National Innovative Diploma on Solar Technology on the platform of the National Board for Technical Education

Professor Uwakwe is a recipient of several prestigious Awards including the Nelson Mandela Leadership merit award as ‘Africa Patriotic Leader’, and the National Productivity Order of Merit (MPOM) award.

Prof. A. A. Uwakwe is happily married to Dr. Mrs. T. N. Uwakwe (an Accountant/Lecturer) and their marriage is blessed with five (5) children (one (1) Girl and four (4) Boys).
