Meet a #Nigerian environmental genius, Babajide Alo, a distinguished Professor of Chemistry, University of Lagos, Nigeria.
BACKGROUND
Prof. Babajide Alo is an internationally acknowledged expert in Environmental management issues and Chemical Pollution studies especially in developing countries with over 20 years of Environmental Consultancy experience in Marine Pollution; Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental audit, Waste Management, Bioremediation and international negotiations of global instruments for sustainable development.
He has been retained by various facets of the industry for over 30 years as Pollution and Environmental Resources Expert and Project Leader of over 25 Environmental EIA Projects and over 10 Post-spill Studies in the Nigerian Oil Industry working for MOBIL, SHELL, CHEVRON, TEXACO,etc and continues to work for these companies and international organizations, UNIDO, UNEP, etc.
His special focus is on organic toxicants and contaminants in the environment.
He has served as the Resident Consultant to the Lagos State Ministry of Environment on all environmental issues and Consultant to the Federal Ministry of Environment.
He has served as Managing Director of UNILAG CONSULT (1994 – 1995); Chairman of University of Lagos Endowment Committee (1998-1999); Chairman of the University of Lagos Central Research Committee, Chairman of UNILAG CONSULT Management Board (2008-2012), Chairman, MuleleAfodu Endowment Board of Trustees and Member, University of Lagos Governing Council (2010-2016); and currently Chairman, Pastor E.A.Adeboye Professorial Chair Board of Trustees.
Prof. BabajideAlo was educated at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he obtained the Upper Second Class in B.Sc. Hons. Chemistry in 1974 and followed it up directly with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1979. He spent an Intercalation Year on the Ph.D. at the University of Bristol School of Chemistry in the UK.
He undertook extensive postdoctoral work and served as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada (1983-1987). He has undergone training at the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank (now WBI), Washington on the Political Economy of the Environment (1994-1995).
Prof. Alo has taught and carried out extensive research in Heterocyclic Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry working on the role of Organic Toxicants in the Environment and all aspects of Environmental Management. He has over 160 publications in learned Journals and Conference proceedings to his credit.
He is among the globally selected co-authors of the UNEP Global Chemicals Outlook (GCO I) and contributing author of the recent United Nations World Ocean Assessment, published by the Cambridge University Press, in 2016. Presently, he is UNEP’s Africa Regional Consultant/Expert for the Regional Contextualisation of GCO II.
He was appointed full Professor of Chemistry at the University of Lagos in May 1993.
He is a Fellow, of the Nigeria Academy of Science (FAS); Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (FCSN), Fellow, Institute of Public analysts of Nigeria, Fellow, Nigerian Environmental Society of Nigeria, Fellow, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria and many more.
He is a former two-time Professor & Head of the Department of Chemistry, former Sub-Dean and later Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor – (Academics & Research) of the University of Lagos- (2012-2016).
He is a leading authority on the Pollution Studies of the Lagos Lagoon in West Africa. He is a member of IMO’s Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP).
