Oba (Prof.) Olusegun MacGregor is a native of Ilawo, Oke-Ona Egba, with royal ancestry on both his paternal and maternal lineages. He is the son of the Late Chief H. A. Adebisi MacGregor, the Oluwo Ilawo and Lisa Egba; his paternal grandfather is the infamous Late Chief (Capt.) Gbadamosi B. MacGregor (born ca.1864), the second Balogun of Ilawo (ca. 1916-1966) and progenitor of the MacGregor Clan in Egbaland.
On his maternal lineage, Oba Olusegun MacGregor is the grand-son of the Late Prince J.S. Sule-Ademiluyi and the great-G-grands on of Late Imperial Majesty, Oba Ademiluyi Ajagun (born ca. 1860), the 48th Ooni of Ile-Ife (1910-1930).
Oba MacGregor attended Ladi-Lak primary school in Lagos and commenced secondary school education at Ibadan Grammar School, Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He furthered his education in the United Kingdom at Greylands International and Bembridge College, Isle of Wight, UK where he completed his secondary school ordinary (O’Level) and advanced (A’Level)courses. He continued his university level education in UK receiving B.Sc. honors degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Medical Biochemistry and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Wales and the Royal Post-Graduate Medical School London, UK.
Oba MacGregor is a distinguished professor of Biopharmaceutics, the founder and current president of the Toronto Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology (TIPT¨) – Canada’s premier post-graduate institute of pharmaceutical sciences, technology, and research.
Professor MacGregor is a seasoned business entrepreneur, a world acclaimed pharmaceutical inventor, and a noted expert in translating advances in pharmaceutical and medicinal science into sustainable business. On the world-stage, Dr. MacGregor is a recipient of several global patents in the field of phytotherapy, medical treatments and advanced drug delivery technologies most notably from Canada, US, Australia, Europe, Latin America, China, India, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan. MacGregor’s inventions have led to groundbreaking therapeutic drugs for the treatment cancer, management of diabetes, systemic infections, and post-operative pain.
Professor MacGregor is the recipient of several international awards of excellence. In 2003, Prof. MacGregor received African Canadian Science & Technology award of excellence. In 2004, Prof. MacGregor received a distinguished award of excellence from the Nigerian Canadian Association.
In 2004, Professor MacGregor was named an International Pharmaceutical Expert for the City of Beijing, Peoples Republic of China, an award proffered by the Mayor of Beijing, China. In 2005, Professor. MacGregor received the prestigious Harry Jerome Trailblazer award (highest honor) from the Canadian Black Business and Professional Association.
In 2017, in commemoration of Canada’s 150-year anniversary, Prof. MacGregor was named as one of 150 extra-ordinary Canadians. In 2022, Prof. MacGregor was further named one of one hundred most influential Black Canadians.
From 2005-2019 Prof. MacGregor received several patents for medical treatments including diabetes, cancer, post-operative pain, and epilepsy. Approximately 36 patents have been awarded in USA, Canada, Japan, Europe (29 Countries), China, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil and Malaysia.
Professor MacGregor has authored and co-authored several articles and manuscripts in the field of pharmaceutical science and technology. He is the founding member and Chair of the Canadian Association of Pharmaceutical Technologists (CapTech), the founding member and past-Chair of the Toronto Pharmaceutical Ethics Committee for research in human, a member of several scientific associations like the prestigious Control Release Society (CRS), Canadian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CSPS) and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (AAPS).
Professor MacGregor is the founder and Chairman of the MacGregor Heritage Foundation, an NGO based in Abeokuta, Ogun State providing all-inclusive funding for children’s education, women and youth empowerment and welfare. He is a consummate Egba man, a world-acclaimed pharmaceutical scientist and industrialist whose belief in our tradition and customs and values coupled with his family’s historical antecedents of leadership and advancement for people of Ilawo kingdom has spurred his unwavering passion and desire for the development Egbaland and our nation in general.
