Nigerian Icon of Good Governance NIGG

The Nigerian Icon of Good Governance NIGG Award is created by the Nigerian Books of Record, NBR to recognize and honor individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting good governance principles in Nigeria.

This prestigious award aims to encourage the use of power to regulate economic and social resources for the development of the country.

The award seeks to minimize corruption, promote transparency and accountability, involve stakeholders in decision-making, and prioritize people-oriented development.

Recipients of the award are expected to exemplify excellence in governance and contribute significantly to the progress and well-being of Nigerian society.

The Nigerian Icon of Good Governance NIGG Award is here to empower effective leadership for a better Nigeria. It is a distinguished honor that acknowledges and celebrates exceptional leaders who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria.

This prestigious award aims to promote the responsible use of power, minimize corruption, and foster people-oriented development that responds to the needs and aspirations of the community.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for this award, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be elected into office in any of the three tiers of government in Nigeria, including federal, state, or local government.
  2. Have served in the elected office for at least one year, demonstrating a minimum level of experience and commitment to public service.

Assessment Indices:

The following ten parameters will be used to assess nominees for the award, providing a comprehensive evaluation of their leadership and governance performance:

  1. 1. Participation: Encouraging citizen’s engagement, inclusive decision-making and active participation in governance processes. And ensuring everyone right to freedom of association and expression.
  2. Rule of Law: Upholding the principles of justice, equality and fairness, ensuring that all citizens are treated equally and without discrimination, enforcing the Nigerian constitution, especially concerning human rights law.
  3. Transparency: Ensuring openness, clarity and accessibility to stakeholders (especially those who are directly affected by the policy) in governance processes, policies and actions. Working under existing provisions in the Nigerian constitution.
  4. Responsiveness: Effectively addressing the timely needs, concerns, and aspirations of citizens, demonstrating a commitment to public service.
  5. Social Infrastructural Development: Investing in essential, high quality and durable pulbic services and amenities, such as education, healthcare, roads and other infrastructures.
  6. Consensus-Oriented: Fostering stakeholders’ collaboration, consensus-building and inclusive decision-making process.
  7. Equity and Inclusiveness: Promoting fairness, equal opportunities, and social justice, addressing the needs of marginalized and vulnerable groups.
  8. Effectiveness and Efficiency: Delivering results, using resources optimally, and demonstrating a commitment to excellence.
  9. Human Capacity Development: Building skills, knowledge, and capabilities, investing in human capital and development.
  10. Accountability: Demonstrating responsibility, answerability, and transparency, ensuring that leaders are accountable to citizens and stakeholders.

These indices align with the standards set by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), ensuring a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process that recognizes exceptional leadership and governance performance.
